Diamond Coring at the Spiral Car Park, Ipswich, Suffolk

Diamond Coring IpswichProject: Diamond Coring, New Ventilation Holes

Location: Spiral Car Park, Ipswich, Suffolk

Client: ING building

This project involved diamond coring new ventilation holes in the historic spiral car park in Ipswich, Suffolk.  The car park was constructed in 1967 and apparently at the time was the largest deep excavation in Europe.  It is also a rare example of a concrete underground car park constructed outside of London.

The requirement was to diamond core 6 no. 300 diameter holes through the central 255mm reinforced concrete wall.  These holes are to allow new ventilation ducts to be installed.  The spiral car parks ventilation system works by having two large fans in the central concourse at the base of the car park.  These fans draw in air from the vehicle park area and exhale it out through a chimney stack.  The air is replaced by clean air drawn in from the car entrance. These new ventilation ducts were required to ensure the correct air transfer rate was occurring within the car park.  The six holes were diamond cored over a two day period including water control to ensure the water run-off did not flow down the walking ramps.  The ventilation engineers following close behind to minimise disruption.
