Drill Masters Ltd, Cambridge Diamond Drilling specialists were required to undertake a more unusual job recently. Contacted by GLW Engineering we were asked to drill 502 No. 40 diameter holes to a depth of 100mm in a pre-cast concrete staircase. The diamond cored holes were needed for a new handrail system to be installed into the concrete staircase and grouted in place. Furthermore, the high number of holes and the accuracy required meant the operation needed to be meticulous planned and executed. This was further complicated by the need to control the water run off because the staircase could not get flooded with water.
To achieve the aims of the project Drill Masters utilised vacuum sealing drill motor stands. These stands ensured both accuracy and perfect uniformity for each hole. The diamond drilling Cambridge project took a total of 4 weeks to complete due to these requirements. This was because of the high level of accuracy and the water control required for each hole.
GLW Engineering are specialist metal fabricators and staircase manufacturers. Geoff Cook commented “Drill Masters provided an excellent service to the precise requirements and the control of the water and accuracy were spot on. I cannot fault them and would definitely use them again. In fact we have another staircase to do in the same building.”
